MANILA - Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Tuesday slammed a viral recording on social media imitating her voice and issuing fake statements on the novel coronavirus, saying "it was deliberately produced to fool the public into believing that it was hers."
"I did not record the voice clip, which clearly was a product of a deeply sick mind that deserves to be rejected and condemned, especially this time when we are collectively up in arms against a common enemy, COVID-19," she said in a statement,
She added: "It’s beyond my understanding why would someone wish for more confusion, fear, and harm among our people who are now being tormented by the horrors brought by the deadly coronavirus to their daily lives — especially the poor."
"Overly enraged", Duterte-Carpio warned "it won't be long" before the person behind the recording will test positive for the dreaded disease "due to his/her behavior."
Fake statements and news posts have circulated the internet ever since President Rodrigo Duterte, Sara's father, placed the northern island of Luzon under mass quarantine to curb the COVID-19 spread.
As of Friday, the Philippines has recorded 803 cases of COVID-19, 54 of whom died and 31 others recovered.
