MANILA - Sen. Joseph Victor "JV" Ejercito said Monday he is backing the creation of a Department of Housing to place all the housing departments under one roof.
Ejercito, who chairs the Senate Committee on Urban Planning, Housing and Resettlement, said converting the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council into a department will result to more coordinated movement of housing agencies.
Under Ejercito's proposal, the new Housing Department would house key shelter agencies under one roof, including Home Guaranty Corporation, National Housing Authority, Social Housing Finance Corporation, Home Development Mutual Fund, Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board, and National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation.
This would provide better cooperation among key government shelter agencies, which currently provide housing services to different sectors, Ejercito added.
"Hindi construction lang, pag housing kasi kasama ang livelihood, utilities, services, transport, public services," the senator said.
He also said providing a similar mandate would also help address the 5.5 million housing backlogs, including 1.2 million in Metro Manila.
Ejercito said the government is only producing around 200,000 to 300,000 housing units annually. However, it might increase to 500,000 to 1 million per year if the housing agencies are more coordinated.
Meanwhile, Ejercito said the joint-session of Senate and Lower House on the KADAMAY's occupation of government housing projects for cops and soldiers in Bulacan is set after Holy Week.
Ejercito said the hearing might take place after three weeks, where KADAMAY and government housing agencies are set to meet.
"Investigation na rin on what transpired and what happened and hopefully we csn offer solutions with the government housing agencies also and the diff organizations concerned para magka harap-harap din," he said.
