MANILA - A coalition of opposition senatorial bets is needed in the 2019 midterm elections, a reelectionist senator said Monday, as ruling PDP-Laban bared names likely to be included in its roster.

Sen. Bam Aquino, a member of the Senate minority from the Liberal Party, said a genuine opposition is needed amid doubts and concerns over administration policies.

"Kailangan magtulong-tulong at magsama-sama 'yung iba't ibang mga grupo na ngayon ay mayroon nang duda, concerns, o pagtutol sa mga polisiya ng administrasyon," he told ANC.

Aquino added that the midterm elections must push through in 2019 as it would provide "check and balance" to the current administration's policies.

There have been recent talk of a "no election" scenario next year as lawmakers push for charter change in a bid to shift to a federal form of government.

"Kaya mahalagang matuloy itong eleksiyon na ito. Makikita talaga natin kung ano 'yung pakiramdam ng mga tao sa mga polisiya ng administrasyon," Aquino said.

Several names have been floated to be included in PDP-Laban's senatorial slate. Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, the party's president, included allies in his own lineup.

These include reelectionists aligned with the majority such as Senators JV Ejercito, Sonny Angara, Cynthia Villar, Nancy Binay and Grace Poe, collectively known as "The Force."

These lawmakers have been in in talks with PDP-Laban or Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte's regional political party Hugpong ng Pagbabago.

Aquino clarified that he is not joining "The Force" but he is joining "The Resistance," in reference to a movement against the ruling "First Order" in the "Star Wars" lore.

In a statement, the lawmaker added: "In 2019, hindi lang 'The Force' kailangan, we need 'The Resistance' – a genuine opposition slate. You will find me on that slate."
