MANILA - A Filipino worker in Kuwait has tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a Department of Foreign Affairs official said Friday.
Citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Civilian Security and Consular Concerns Brigido Dulay said it was the first case of a Philippine citizen diagnosed with the disease in the Gulf state.
"Kuwait PE has reported that an OFW has tested positive for Covid-19. This is the first case involving a Filipino in this Middle Eastern country. Details to follow once released by Kuwaiti authorities,” Dulay said.
Several Filipinos have tested positive for the virus overseas, including in 13 in Singapore and 1 in Macau.
Globally, COVID-19, which originated in China, has infected over 209,000 people and killed 8,700. Now a pandemic, it has triggered lockdowns and home quarantine orders worldwide as governments scrambled to contain the fast-spreading respiratory disease.
