MANILA - Sen. Nancy Binay on Thursday urged the National Food Authority (NFA) to already distribute rice to families severely affected by the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon and other places.
"Anong oras na? Dapat ipamigay na ng NFA ang mga bigas sa tao. Importanteng maitawid muna natin kahit 14 days lang ang mga pamilyang direktang naapektuhan ng lockdown. Hindi ito bakasyon, giyera ito," Binay said in a statement.
(What time is it already? The NFA should start distributing rice to people. It's important that even for only 14 days, we help make ends meet for families directly affected by the lockdown. This is not a vacation, this is war.)
Under Republic Act No. 11203, the NFA is mandated to maintain a sufficient level of rice supply for emergency or calamity situations. The agency will also sell rice through government agencies and other concerned parties.
Binay said the NFA has warehouses full of rice supply enough to be distributed to the most affected residents during the quarantine.
"Kailangan pa ba nating hintayin na magkagulo at may mamatay sa gutom? Ano ba ang plano? Sana kumilos na [ang NFA] para matulungan lahat ng nangangailangan," she said.
(Do we need to wait for chaos and deaths due to starvation? What's the plan? Hopefully, [NFA)] will help all those who are in need.)
Before Metro Manila was placed under tougher travel restrictions to arrest the spread of COVID-19, NFA had said the capital region has sufficient rice supply for relief operations.
