The city of Zamboanga in Mindanao will be placed under "enhanced community quarantine" starting March 20, Friday to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco said Wednesday.
Climaco, in a Facebook post, said she wants to limit the movement of people in the city to stop the spread of the virus.
Under the city quarantine guidelines, travel of uniformed personnel, government officers and members of task force COVID-19 for official business especially those transporting medical supplies, laboratory specimens related to the said virus, and other humanitarian assistance, are allowed. Valid IDs will have to be presented in checkpoints.
A curfew from 9:00 p.m. till 5: a.m. will be implemented.
Classes and school activities in all levels are still suspended all over the city.
Mass gatherings, including religious ones, will be prohibited.
"Establishments providing basic necessities will remain open and such activities related to food and medicine production, i.e., public markets, supermarkets, groceries, convenience stores, bakeries, hospitals, medical clinics, pharmacies and drug stores, food preparation and delivery services, water -refilling stations, manufacturing and processing plants of basic food products and medicines, agricultural and fishery products and ancillary inputs, banks, money transfer services, power, energy, fuel, water and telecommunications supplies and facilities shall be open," according to the guidelines.
The local government will arrange a work from home scheme. Members of the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, health and emergency frontline services, border control, financial institutions, power, water, and telecom utilities and other critical services are exempted.
"A strict home quarantine shall be observed in all households; movement shall be limited to accessing basic necessities; and there will be heightened presence of uniform personnel to enforce quarantine procedures. For this purpose, only two (2) individuals per household will be allowed to leave their homes. Barangay officials shall be directed to monitor compliance with this policy," she said.
Funeral services will still be available and immediate burials are advised.
The movement of cargo within and into Zamboanga City will not be barred during the quarantine.
The Philippine government earlier placed Luzon island under an enhanced community quarantine to contain the virus.
The health department has confirmed a total of 187 cases of COVID-19 with 14 fatalities, and 6 patients recovering.
