MANILA - Otso Diretso senatorial candidate Mar Roxas on Saturday shrugged off President Rodrigo Duterte’s tirades against the opposition ticket, saying the chief executive has been spewing “nonsense.”
Duterte, in several public speeches, had alleged that Roxas did not accomplish anything as a senator and as a Cabinet member during the administration of his predecessor Benigno Aquino III.
The president had also unloaded expletives at his 2016 presidential elections rival, saying he could “shoot Roxas for free.”
“Naku, hindi ko na pinapansin 'yung mga hirit na 'yan dahil hindi naman importante 'yan, wala namang saysay 'yan,” Roxas told reporters in an interview while campaigning in a Quezon City market.
(I don’t pay attention to those comments because it’s not important, it’s nonsense.)
“Panahon ng pulitika ngayon so naiintindihan ko kabahagi naman 'yun na ipro-promote 'yung kandidato na gusto nila i-promote. Sabihin na lang nila ang nagawa nila, ano ba ang gagawin nila kasi sa'kin importante ano ang tututukan ko,” he said.
(We’re in the season of politics now. I understand that this is part of politics, but they should also outline their accomplishments and what they plan to do.)
The opposition slate has been slamming administration-backed candidates for staying mum on national issues and for hiding behind the President and his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
Roxas lost to Duterte in the May 2016 presidential elections 6.62 million votes.
