MANILA - While women take great strides as both homemaker and breadwinner, they are "still subjected to so many cultural dictates,” Vice President Leni Robredo said Tuesday.

“'Pag 'yung mga nanay hindi muna umuwi sa bahay at uminom, masamang babae, pero 'yung mga lalaki ok lang. Maraming hugot, no?” Robredo, the highest ranking woman in government, asked in jest.

Robredo spoke at the women empowerment and gender equality talk of Automatic Data Processing (ADP), a company that provides human resource services in Makati City, as part of her rounds in commemoration of Women’s Month.

ADP said 50 percent of its workforce and 60 percent of its leaders are women.

Without mentioning specific instances, Robredo also pointed out that women who are vocal are subjected to attacks.

“We see women attacked when we begin to express opposing views,” Robredo said.

Robredo encouraged the audience, mostly women, to allow themselves to grow in their chosen careers and that they should not be forced to make the difficult choice between career and family.

“Women should never be made to make choices,” Robredo said.

Robredo told the audience that she herself married at the age of 22 and was able to juggle her law studies and eventual law practice with her family life.
