MANILA - Former defense and Army chief Fortunato Abat was laid to rest at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on Tuesday.
Abat, who passed away last March 7 at 92, was given full military honors.
Among those who attended the burial were Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, his predecessor Gilbert Teodoro, and other military officials.
Philippine Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Louie Villanueva paid tribute to Abat, who served as the Army's commanding general from 1976 to 1981.
"'Yung pagmamahal niya sa bansa, 'yun ang kinakailangang manahin natin, ng bawat isa... Sa iba't-ibang larangan, dapat ipakita natin ang pagmamahal sa ating bansa," Villanueva said.
Abat also served as ambassador to China before his appointment to the defense department during the term of former President Fidel Ramos.
