MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte is selling a Mercedez Benz luxury car that was recently gifted to him.

Duterte said on Sunday that he had refused to accept the car but the person who gave it to him insisted on leaving it at the Presidential Security Group (PSG) compound in Malacañang.

"Ito nga totoo eh, nagbigay sa akin Mercedes-Benz, totoo ‘yun. Punta ka sa PSG, nandiyan sa compound... Nagmamagandang-loob, sabi ko okay. Hindi ko tinatanggap, lagay ko lang diyan," he said in a speech during the 30th anniversary celebration of his party, PDP-Laban.

(This is the truth, someone gave me a Mercedez-Benz, that's true. Go to the PSG compound, it's there. I did not accept it, I only left it there.)

The President said he is auctioning off the car as he has no desire or need for it.

"Interesado ang sinong taxpayer, bilhin mo sa gobyerno, ipagbili ko. Hindi ako sumasakay ng kotse. Kayong taga-Davao, alam ninyo ‘yan, 1988 pick-up lang ako. Hanggang ngayon sa Davao, pick-up lang ako," he said.

(If any taxpayer is interested, buy it from the government, I'll sell it to you. I don't ride cars. Davao City residents know that, I only use a 1988 pick-up truck. Even now, when I go to Davao, I only use my truck.)

Proceeds from the car's sale will be used for state projects, Duterte added.

The President did not identify the person who gave him the car.
