NORTH COTABATO - Armed men claiming to be communist rebels burned a passenger bus in the town of Makilala on Monday.
At around 9 a.m., a passenger bus owned the Yellow Bus Line was torched by men who claimed to be members of the New People's Army (NPA) in Sitio Silang Barangay, Brgy. San Vicente.
The bus was bound for Davao City from Marbel, South Cotabato and was carrying 17 passengers.
According to the bus conductor, the bus was traversing Brgy. San Vicente when five men flagged it down and came on board.
The bus conductor said the men, who identified themselves as members of the NPA, were armed with pistols.
The armed men also said they would only take the bus and not harm the passengers. They directed the driver to make a detour to Sitio Silang, which was around 100 meters away from the highway.
All of the passengers disembarked and ran away from the bus out of fear.
The armed men then set the bus on fire.
According to an official of the Yellow Bus Line, the bus cost six million pesos. This was the seventh bus of Yellow Bus Line torched by alleged NPA members.
The incident follows the resumption of peace talks between the Philippine government and the CPP-NPA-NDF reached over the weekend.
