MANILA - The San Juan government on Thursday confirmed another case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), raising the number of infections in the city to 8.

The 57-year-old man is confined at a hospital in Metro Manila and in stable condition, the city government said in an advisory.

The new patient, a resident of Barangay Greenhills, sought medical care after experiencing cough and colds.

He was placed under home quarantine and later transferred to a hospital after being diagnosed with the disease.

It was not yet clear if he is part of the country's 49 positive cases announced by health authorities on Wednesday. The city government also didn't elaborate how the patient contracted the disease.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora urged his constituents to exercise proper hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and disinfection procedures.

Using sodium hypochlorite solution with water is an effective but cost efficient disinfectant, he said.

The new strain of coronavirus, which has spread to 114 countries and territories, has sickened more than 118,000 people and killed nearly 4,300 others.
