MANILA - There are 8 names in the PDP-Laban's shortlist of nominees for the next House Speaker, including Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez and Leyte Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez, party president Sen. Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel said Monday.
House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who secured her post from Alvarez last year, is on her last term as Pampanga representative, which ends after the May midterm polls.
"We have shortlisted 8 PDP-Laban members whom we will back up for House Speakership," Pimentel told ANC.
Aside from Alvarez and Torres-Gomez, the senator said the shortlist includes Cavite Rep. Alex Advincula, Pampanga Rep. Aurelio "Dong" Gonzales, San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora, Cavite Rep. Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino, Marinduque Rep. Lord Alan Velasco and South Cotabato Rep. Ferdinand Hernandez.
The 8 have developed key relationships and some are already deputy speakers, said Pimentel.
Should they all win in the May 13 polls, PDP-Laban leaders will gather them and "try to further shorten the list," he said.
"The process must produce only 1 nominee," he noted.
Securing the Speakership, he added, "should be a legitimate aspiration for a political party, especially one fielding 120 congressmen and congresswomen candidates" like PDP-Laban.
