MANILA - A Muntinlupa court has granted detained Senator Leila De Lima a one-day furlough for a medical checkup.

In an order dated March 6, Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 206 allowed De Lima to leave her detention facility at the national police headquarters in Camp Crame to undergo a CT scan at the Philippine Heart Center.

The court branch is one of three Muntinlupa salas handling drug cases against the senator.

"Accused De Lima's personal physician, Dr. Errol Rhett Santelices, prescribed that she immediately undergo further examination, particularly [a] CT scan of the liver after finding an impression of a liver mass," the document read.

The exact date of the senator's medical test was not stated on the document, but sources said she may take the furlough on Monday.

This is the first time De Lima was granted a furlough since she was detained in February last year for allegedly masterminding drug operations inside the national penitentiary.

Detained on non-bailable drug charges, the senator had only been able to leave detention to attend court hearings.

The fierce administration critic has denied the drug charges, slamming them as political persecution.
