MANILA- The Commission on Elections announced Monday the suspension of voter registration from Tuesday, March 10 until the end of the month as a precautionary measure against the spread of COVID-19.
Poll body spokesperson James Jimenez said the suspension is a response to "the growing threat to public health" posed by the virus.
"The suspension will take effect nationwide tomorrow. The public is advised to take all necessary precaution," Jimenez said in a Twitter post.
The development came after President Rodrigo Duterte placed the country under a state of public health emergency to arrest the spread of the pathogen that has killed 3,500 and infected 109,000 people worldwide.
Comelec began a new round of voter registration last Jan. 20 which will run until Sept. 30, 2021.
