MANILA - Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella on Thursday said that it is up to President Rodrigo Duterte whether to appoint Perfecto Yasay to another post after the Commission on Appointments (CA) rejected his appointment as foreign affairs secretary.

"That is his option if he chooses to," Abella said.

Abella said the issue has not been discussed yet, but it is still the president's prerogative to appoint him to another post if he wants to.

Malacanang announced Thursday that Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Enrique Manalo will be the acting secretary in the meantime.

"He will hold the position until the president appoints a new secretary. In the meantime, USEC Manalo is an excellent transition man and has been on top of many crucial issues together with Atty. Perfecto Yasay," he said.

Duterte, after winning the presidential race in May 2016, said he would offer the Department of Foreign Affairs post to his running mate, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, after the one-year election ban on defeated candidates.

But Abella could not say if the president is going to give the post now to Cayetano.

"I don't have an opinion regarding that matter," Abella said.
