MANILA- Self-confessed hitman Edgar Matobato on Thursday surrendered to police so he can post bail for his frustrated murder case.

While Matobato can attempt to post bail, his release will depend on the court, said Chief Superintendent Joel Coronel, Manila Police District director.

Matobato told a Senate investigation in October that he was part of President Rodrigo Duterte's alleged hit squad, when the Chief Executive was mayor of Davao City.

“If the court will order his immediate release then we will have to abide by the order if not he will be detained at such time until they can secure an order," he said.

Coronel said Matobato would be given police security.

The Regional Trial Court Branch 19 in Digos City, Davao del Sur had ordered the arrest of Matobato over a frustrated murder case filed by Abeto Salcedo Jr., a retired adjudicator of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR).

Salcedo identified Matobato as the one who shot him on Oct. 23, 2014, as he was stepping out of the DAR regional office in Digos.

The Court set Matobato's bail at P200,000.
