DAVAO DEL NORTE - Authorities have warned they will shut down 30 erring resorts in the Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte for violating environmental regulations.
City investment and tourism officer Jennifer Cariaga said they are giving the establishments a year to either build wastewater treatment facilities or face closure.
"Only a few of them have wastewater treatment facility. Most of them are large resorts," she said.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resoures (DENR) issued last year notices of violation to the resorts for improper waste disposal.
Four septic tanks were temporarily built.
Araceli Ayuste, president of the Samal Island Tourism Council, said they are helping the resorts build their own treatment plants.
She called on the operators to coordinate or they stand to lose their accreditation and business permits. - Report from Bonna Pamplona, ABS-CBN News
