MANILA - Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday apologized to Senator Manny Pacquiao after the latter took offense at Trillanes' comment on senators who questioned retired police officer Arturo Lascañas' spiritual renewal.

A Philippine Daily Inquirer report said Trillanes took a swipe at senators by saying that their own spiritual renewal did not make them saints.

Pacquiao, in a privilege speech, admitted that he took offense after reading about Trillanes' statement.

"As senators, we do not impose our morals on our resource persons. And for the record, I am not imposing my morals on SPO3 Lascañas. I was just offended with the statement of my colleague, Senator Trillanes," he said.

"Wala naman talagang santo dito. We all commit sin. Wala ni isa sa atin na hindi gumawa ng kasalanan at walang kasalanan. For the record, I did not become a saint after my spiritual renewal," Pacquiao added.

Trillanes clarified that he was not referring to any particular senator when he made the statement but was merely questioning senators after Lascañas' spiritual renewal became a contentious issue.

"Dun sa article na 'yun, walang pangalan doon eh kasi marami, hindi lang naman si Senator Pacquiao ang nagmention about spiritual renewal," he said.

"Naging contentious point 'yung spiritual renewal. Ako, ang ano ko lang doon: why is it hard to believe na nagkaroon ng spiritual renewal 'yung tao?" Trillanes added.

He then apologized to Pacquiao.

"Let me apologize to Senator Pacquiao if he was offended by the statements I made to the media but let me assure you, hindi talaga ganun ang intensyon," Trillanes said.

Lascañas, during a Senate inquiry on Monday, claimed that he decided to tell everything he knows about the so-called Davao Death Squad after dreaming of a "child-like image" saving him from the devil.

Pacquiao, who was among the senators present during the inquiry, then questioned Lascañas about his understanding of "spiritual renewal."

"Alam mo ba yang spiritual renewal? Naintindihan mo ba yan?…Alam ko kung ano ang spiritual renewal," Pacquiao told Lascañas .

(Do you know what spiritual renewal is? Do you understand that? I know what spiritual renewal is.)
