MANILA – A Russian fugitive wanted for fraud in his country was arrested after attempting to extend his temporary visitor’s visa at the Bureau of Immigration’s head office.

The fugitive was identified as 37-year old Likharev Anton. Records show that he arrived in the country in 2016 as a tourist and has not left since.

“We will not allow fraudsters like him to hide in the Philippines, as they pose a risk to public interest,” Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said in a statement.

In 2017, the Russian fugitive made headlines for violating the Fisheries Code of the Philippines and a municipal ordinance when he killed a green sea turtle with a spear in Dauin, Negros Oriental. He reportedly denied that it was his intention to kill the turtle. He likewise said he did not know that the area is a marine sanctuary.

The BI said Anton was already for deportation in December 2018 following information that he was wanted by Russian courts for large-scale crimes, involving acquisition of other people’s property by means of deceit, in violation of Article 159, part 4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

Anton is detained in Bicutan, Taguig pending the implementation of his deportation.
