MANILA - The Tandang Sora interchange and flyover in Quezon City were shuttered Saturday night to give way to the construction of the MRT-7.
Authorities sealed off the area with concrete and plastic barriers. Signs were placed on both lanes to inform motorists of the closure and lead them to 2 nearby U-turn slots.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority also set stoplights in the area to "flashing," allowing enforcers to manually direct traffic.
The Tandang Sora flyover will be demolished to give way to the rails and a station of the MRT-7, which will link Quezon City and San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan.
Some 100,000 motorists will be affected by the closure, which is expected to spawn major traffic gridlocks.
The 14-station rail line spanning 22 kilometers is part of the government's P8-trillion infrastructure program.
