MANILA - French legislators were impressed with the rehabilitation of tourist island Boracay, Sen. Loren Legarda said Saturday as she hosted them on behalf of the Philippine Senate.
Aside from cleanliness of the island, Legarda said the French delegation was also impressed with the "change in the mindset of locals who now realize the importance of sustainable development."
"Boracay’s successful rehab is an example of political will and strong leadership. The agencies of government have effectively implemented the environmental laws that we have crafted. Our French guests said that they have much to learn from us," she said in an Instagram post.
The French delegation was composed of Senators Jacky Deromedi, Simon Sutour, Philippe Mouiller, and Jerôme Durain, according to Legarda.
The island, which had grappled with sewage woes, overcrowding, and poorly regulated development, reopened in October 2018 following a 6-month massive cleanup and rehabilitation.
