MANILA - The Philippines' capital city of Manila will give away P1 million each to barangays adjudged the "cleanest and greenest" from among its districts, Mayor Isko Moreno said Sunday.
"Papahuli ba ang barangay niyo? The search for the CLEANEST and GREENEST barangay is on!" the mayor said in a tweet.
A technical working group will validate the shortlisted barangays, according to Moreno. This will be composed of representatives from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and departments of environment, interior and local government, and Science and Technology.
"Cash prize should be used (by the winners) in the betterment and improvement of the barangays in terms of ecological solid waste management and the creation of clean and green projects as suggested by DILG," the city government said.
In order to be shortlisted, barangays must follow the following criteria:
- 30 points for segregation at source and segregated collection
- 20 points for a material recovery facility
- 20 points for greening programs (vertical gardening, urban garden or urban agriculture)
- 15 points for barangay solid waste management committee
- 15 points for barangay weekly clean up
There was no immediate information on the date of the proclamation of winners.
For further details, the public may contact the city's Department of Public Services at 527-4967 / 310-1239.
Moreno has carried out programs to clean up and beautify the city and also urged residents to shift to better sanitary practices.
