NAGA—Salvacion Gerona, Vice-President Leni Robredo's mother, was laid to rest at the Eternal Memorial Gardens here Saturday afternoon, a week after she passed away.

A Mass was first offered for Gerona at Basilica Minore, where Robredo recalled memories of her mother.

"Para sa kaniya, kapag nakahiga pa kami sa kama na mataas na 'yung sun, gustong sabihin nu'n tamad kami," Robredo said.

Robredo said she learned how to maintain her composure in the most difficult situations by watching Gerona raise her and her siblings.

"Marami po sa akin nagtatanong, 'Papaano mo ginagawa 'yung lahat na marami kang kahirapan na pinagdadaanan?' How can I not? With a mother who showed me how to be resilient but never overbearing, audacious but never degrading, empowered and always empowering," Robredo said.

The Vice President, a known target of social media trolls, shared that her mother learned to use the online platform and defended her against netizens out to bash her.

"I don't know if it's a good thing or bad thing. Good, siguro kasi it kept her busy. Pero bad, kasi every time may nagba-bash sa akin, sinasagot niya. Nakikita ko sa mga troll sites 'yung comments ni mommy," she said.

Robredo thanked all who gave her and her family support after Gerona's death on Feb. 22.

A month before her passing, news of Gerona’s deteriorating health emerged after Robredo announced her mother’s condition “turned for the worst” but that it later improved.

Gerona, who was 83, taught in and served at Universidad de Santa Isabel in Naga, one of the oldest schools in the country.
