MANILA—BUHAY party-list Rep. Lito Atienza on Saturday accused House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano of "creating a scenario of uncertainty in the issue of the Speakership" with his allegation of a looming ouster plot against him.

"Stop creating a scenario of treachery and an attempted coup. There is no such thing, Mr. Speaker. You are creating the problem. There is no problem" Atienza said in a statement.

Cayetano on Thursday said he traced from Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco's camp efforts to unseat him so that the latter can take over the lower chamber's top post, way ahead of the agreed date in their term-sharing pact.

Under the agreement, Cayetano would serve as House Speaker for 15 months or until October, to be succeeded by Velasco for 21 months.

Velasco has since denied Cayetano's allegation.

"Up to this day, I continue to honor the term-sharing agreement brokered by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte when the 18th Congress convened in July 2019. From the beginning, I never had any intention of reneging on this agreement. Tayo po ay lalaking may isang salita (I am a man of my word)," he said.

Common sense

Atienza said Velasco has no reason to stage a House coup because all he needed to do was wait until October to get the Speakership.

"Congressman Velasco, in his common sense, will not attempt anything because all he has to do now is wait until October when your term ends," Atienza said.

Atienza then asked Cayetano: "Does this mean that you are preparing to disengage from the gentleman’s agreement in sharing the House Speakership?"

The lawmaker then issued a warning against the House Speaker.
"Stop doing that Mr. Speaker. 'Pag sumira ka sa salita mo, sira ka," Atienza said.
