MANILA — Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday expressed support for the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN Corp. after her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, accepted the network's apology over the airing of a 2016 election ad against him.
"Davao City fully supports ABS-CBN sa kanilang pagpapa-renew ng kanilang franchise. Of course malaki din ang suporta ng ABS-CBN sa Davao City at sa buong bansa," Duterte-Carpio said in a chance interview in Sulu.
"Hopefully ma-resolve in a very positive way ang issue ng franchise ng ABS-CBN," she added.
The House of Representatives has yet to tackle several bills seeking the renewal of ABS-CBN's license to operate, which expires in May.
The country's biggest entertainment and media company is also facing a challenge lodged before the Supreme Court by Solicitor General Jose Calida. The government's lead lawyer sought to nullify ABS-CBN's franchise due to alleged abuses like illegal pay-per-view offering and foreign ownership.
The network, which reaches millions of Filipinos through its television, radio and online platforms, said it "did not violate the law" in its 65-year service.
The network regularly paid taxes and was not facing any complaint or investigation, officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue and Securities and Exchange Commission told senators on Monday.
Last Monday, ABS-CBN president and CEO Carlo Katigbak apologized “if we offended the president,” when it aired a 2016 ad against Duterte. Katigbak said the network was “just abiding by the laws and regulations that surround the airing of political ads.”
The ad showed Duterte using foul language, with children asking if he was doing the right thing.
The President had since repeatedly threatened to shut down ABS-CBN. On Wednesday, he said he had accepted Katigbak's apology, adding that the network's franchise is up to Congress.
"Of course, alam niyo si President Duterte, maawain 'yan na tao. Iniisip din niya 'yung trabaho ng maraming employees ng ABS-CBN," said Duterte-Carpio.
(You know President Duterte is emphatic. He is thinking of the jobs of ABS-CBN's many employees.)
