MANILA - A magnitude 4.3 quake rattled Cotabato province and nearby areas on Thursday, state seismologists said.

The tremor struck around 9 a.m., with its epicenter located 55 kilometers west of Cotabato's Makilala town, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

At a depth of 11 kilometers, the tectonic quake was felt in Kidapawan City and Tulunan, Cotabato at a "strong" intensity 5, which can make hanging objects swing violently and cause rocking felt throughout buildings, said the agency.

Intensity 3, which may feel like a passing of light truck, was reported in Bansalan and Hagonoy, Davao Del Sur, added Phivolcs.

The quake is not expected to spawn aftershocks or major damage, it said.

The Philippines straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt that runs around the Pacific Ocean that is home to most of the world's active and dormant volcanoes and is where the vast majority of earthquakes occur.
