MANILA- Former senator Lito Lapid announced Wednesday that he would be campaigning with reelectionist Sen. Grace Poe.
The 63-year-old action star surprised residents of Iba, Zambales when he showed up at its public market while Poe was making rounds.
"Medyo inampon niya muna ko. Iisa lang puso namin, Poe at Lapid noon pa,” he said.
(She adopted me in a way. We have the same heart, Poe and Lapid since before.)
Both clad in white, the two engaged in dialogue with marketgoers, students, and fishermen in Barangay Kamungan in the town of Iba.
Lapid added that he decided to join Poe in her campaign activities given that her father, late action king Fernando Poe Jr., helped him build a career in the entertainment industry.
The former lawmaker has seen an increase in his pre-election survey ranking due to his appearance in the ABS-CBN primetime show "Ang Probinsyano," the original version of which the late Poe starred in.
Lapid was in the 3rd to 6th bracket in the latest Pulse Asia survey for the May 13 elections, which also saw Poe at the top.
His popularity in the series is evident in his campaign activities as locals often rushed to have photos with him, shouting "pinuno" (leader). Lapid played the leader of a rebel group in the long-running Coco Martin starrer.
He left the show just before the start of the official campaign period earlier this month.
Poe said they would campaign as "independent candidates."
Lapid, however, is part of the Nationalist People's Coalition, where Poe is an adopted member.
“Magandang magkasama kami, pareho nga kaming naka-puti dahil wala namang nag-adopt sa amin. Panatag loob namin sa isa’t-isa,” Poe said.
(It's good that we're together and wearing white since no one adopted us. We're okay with each other.)
