MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte visited the wake of the late Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. on Tuesday.
Duterte condoled with the late central bank chief's family during his visit to the Heritage Park in Taguig City.
Espenilla passed away last Saturday after a year-long battle with tongue cancer. The President has yet to appoint a new central bank chief.
Presumed contenders for Espenilla's post include his three deputy governors, Diwa Guinigundo, Chuchi Fonacier and Cyd Tuano-Amador, the current officer-in-charge.
Monetary Board member and former trade secretary Peter Favila is also rumored to be in the running.
Malacañang on Sunday thanked the late Espenilla for his "great service to the nation."
"As we express our condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and loved ones of Governor Espenilla, we express our gratitude to the man once in charge of disciplining banks for his complete devotion to his work and great service to the nation," Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.
