CEBU CITY - A mother has sought police assistance in search of her 2-week-old child who was allegedly abducted by a "friend" during a trip here from their native Danao town, Northern Cebu.

The mother went to the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) to ask authorities to look into the matter, which she believes is a case of kidnapping.

She told ABS-CBN News that a friend asked her to go the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in Cebu City to light candles and pray for thanksgiving for her newborn child.

Even if she was a stranger to the place, the mother agreed to bring her infant and have her friend accompany her. Capuno said her friend had shown good deeds that built her trust.

After going to church, Capuno and the alleged baby snatcher roamed around the downtown area.

The lady and Capuno then went to a comfort room within the area of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.

When it was Capuno's turn, her friend volunteered to carry the child outside.

By the time the mother went out of the restroom, her friend and the baby were already gone.

She tried asking around but no one could tell where the alleged kidnapper went.

Supt. Ryan Devaras, chief of the CCPO investigation, detection and management unit, said the suspect may be a member of an organized group that kidnaps babies.

Devaras said police are still validating the testimony of Capuno and have asked for CCTV footage from the establishments where the women went in Cebu City.
