MANILA- President Rodrigo Duterte has named a long-time operative of the National Bureau of Investigation as its new officer-in-charge, Malacañang announced Wednesday.

Eric Distor, assistant director for Intelligence Service, was appointed officer-in-charge of the agency following the retirement of Director Dante Gierran, Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said.

Distor assumed his new post last Sunday according to a memorandum signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea made public only on Wednesday.

Distor, who previously led the NBI Internal Affairs Services, cannot be appointed as director of the agency since the NBI Modernization Law mandates that the director must be a lawyer for 15 years.
