The ANC Brief: Network woes

Issues plaguing the country’s largest network will be heard today. Here are the stories making the headlines on ANC today:

ABS-CBN franchise
The Senate is going ahead with the issue of the ABS-CBN franchise and will hold a hearing today on the matter. The hearing is expected to clarify issues on the network. Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza said the inaction of the House of Representatives on the franchise bills was bordering on “illegality.” ANC will be airing the proceedings live.

Gag order
Today is also the day the network is set to answer a petition filed by the Office of Solicitor General before the Supreme Court to issue a gag order on the quo warranto petition it filed against the network. Soledad Mawis, Law Dean of the Lyceum of the Philippines, said Solicitor General Jose Calida needs to prove the need for a gag order.

Virus ship
A labor group said the Philippines should come up with a protocol for handling virus outbreaks on ships. This should be timely since many seafarers of international shipping lines are Filipino. The number of Filipinos infected by the Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID-2019) aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship rose to 52. Filipinos aboard the ship who tested negative are due to return to the country on Tuesday. Meanwhile, a Filipino tested positive for COVID in Singapore. A second Filipino in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also been infected with COVID. And South Korea has raised its virus alert level to the highest due to the outbreak.

Honda Cars Philippines announced it is closing down its automobile factory in Laguna by March, leaving more than 300 employees jobless. What other businesses have left the Philippines? How much of an impact will the closure have on the country’s economy? The Palace said the “Build, Build, Build” program can absorb workers who were displaced. A dialogue among stakeholders is scheduled today.

Dancing queen
Friends, fans, and collaborators showed up for one of the most important nights in Alice Reyes’s life. ANCX was in attendance to witness the thunderous applause for the country’s National Artist for Dance.
