MANILA - The late mother of Vice President Leni Robredo was a "selfless and dedicated teacher," Malacañang said Sunday as it expressed its sympathies to the country's second-highest official.
"We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to Vice President Ma. Leonor "Leni" Robredo for the passing of her beloved mother, Ms. Salvacion Gerona," Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
Gerona died Saturday at the age of 83, Robredo confirmed. She did not specify her mother's ailment but said last month that her condition "turned for the worse" but later improved.
Gerona was "a teacher all her life," Robredo said. Her mother had served Universidad de Santa Isabel in Naga City, Camarines Sur, one of the oldest schools in the country.
"We understand that Sally, as she was fondly called by her loved ones, was a selfless and dedicated teacher who molded countless young minds across generations," Panelo said.
"We pray that the perpetual light will shine upon Ms. Gerona, and that her soul, through the mercy of God, may rest in eternal happiness and peace."
Robredo said her mother’s wake will start at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Eternal Gardens, Balatas Road in Naga City.
