MANILA – Reelectionist Sonny Angara on Thursday refused to engage in a public debate with Otso Diretso senatorial candidate Erin Tañada.

In a Twitter post, Tañada challenged his “friend and former colleague” in a public debate on Feb. 25 at 12:00 p.m. at Plaza Miranda, during the commemoration of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

“We welcome Mayor’s Sarah statement that the administration candidates are ready to debate with the opposition. If this is true, I would like to debate with my friend and former colleague Sen. @sonnyangaraI hope he shows up on Feb. 25 at 12nn at Plaza Miranda. See you Sen Sonny.,” the Tañada said in a Tweet.

Angara said he was up for a debate at the Senate in July after the mid-term polls in May.

But Tañada insisted voters cannot wait for discussions on issues such as inflation, minimum wage, and the tobacco tax.

Angara, who is part of Davao Mayor Sarah Duterte’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago slate, refused with finality in using the hashtag "#Notatmyexpense."

“#notatmyexpense pards. Rise and fall on your own merits pls #kapitlang,” Angara said in a Tweet.

Angara, was among the chief proponents of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) measure, which led to higher prices of basic commodities. The TRAIN law lowered personal income taxes but raised duties on fuel, cars, coal and sugar-sweetened drinks.

Angara was part of the top 10 of Pulse Asia's senatorial preference survey for Jan. 26 to 31.
