MANILA - House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has warned powerful businessmen who allegedly tried to bribe him as he called on traders to mind their customers instead of just making profit.
In an interview on DZMM radio Wednesday, Alvarez said many businessmen were trying to buy him off. He, however, refused to name them.
"Gusto kong warning-an itong mga oligarchs na 'to. Tigilan niyo ako kao-offer ng pera. Hindi ho uubra 'yan," Alvarez said.
(I want to warn these oligarchs. Stop offering me money. That won't work.)
He said bribes were made through messengers. He asserted that he does not need the money.
The lawmaker also called upon big firms to ensure the welfare of their customers instead of just focusing on making money.
"Ang ibig kong sabihin, ayusin niyo 'yung mga tao. Magne-negosyo kayo, huwag naman 'yung puro profit lang. Ayusin niyo din, tingnan niyo rin 'yung kapakanan nung taumbayan," he said.
(What I mean is deal with the people well. Don't do business just for profit. Look at the people's welfare too.)
