CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - Four members of the New People's Army (NPA) surrendered to authorities in Sitio Bulacao, Barangay Concepcion, Valencia City, Bukidnon on Wednesday.
The surrenderers were under the NPA's Sangay ng Partido sa Platoon, Guerilla Front 6, which operates in the southern part of Bukidnon.
They turned over high-powered firearms including an M-16 rifle, carbine rifle, caliber .22 rifle, and assorted ammunition.
Police Chief Superintendent Timoteo Pacleb, regional director of Police Regional Office 10, said the rebels opted to surrender because of hardship in the mountains.
"Basically because of hardship, extreme hardships sa kinalalagyan nila sa bundok. Secondly, nalaman nila yung programa ng gobyerno," he said.
The former rebels will now be part of the Comprehensive Local Integration Program where they will receive P15,000 financial aid. They will also receive P50,000 for their livelihood.
"May training muna sila on how to manage their funds. Hindi nag aaksaya ang gobyerno na ibigay nalang sa kanila, parang meron silang feasibility study on how they will manage their funds," said Maj. Gen. Ronald Villanueva, Commanding General of the 4th Infantry Division.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) also assured that only legitimate NPA members will be accommodated by the government.
"The AFP and PNP has this joint AFP intelligence committee, ang kanilang mga kasama din doon ang nagbibigay sa amin kung sino ang kanilang miyembro, so pag may peke, sabihin namin peke ka dahil sabi ng kasama niyo, hindi ka kasama sa grupo nila," added Villanueva.
In Region 10, PNP has recorded 14 members of the NPA who surrendered, while the 4th Infantry Division has recorded 61 NPA members who surrendered in their area of responsibility since January 2018.
