MANILA- Malacañang defended administration ally Sen. Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa on Friday from critics who denounced the lawmaker's remarks that he is biased towards President Rodrigo Duterte.
Dela Rosa possibly shares the same principles that the President has which is why the neophyte senator is vocal about his support for the administration, Duterte's spokesman Salvador Panelo said.
"Siguro kaya niya (Dela Rosa) sinusuportahan kasi kapareho niya ng prinsipyo si Presidente on matters or subjects na pinag-uusapan," Panelo told reporters.
(Maybe he is supporting the President because they share the same principles on issues that are being discussed)
"Wala naman masama doon kung suportahan niya si presidente," he added.
(There is nothing wrong if he supports the President)
The former police chief drew flak online for saying that his vote on the ABS-CBN franchise renewal would depend on President Duterte's position.
“Ako, I will live and die with President Duterte. I will sink and swim with him," Dela Rosa earlier said.
Calls for him to resign soon circulated on social media and the hashtag "#BatoResign" even trended on Twitter Wednesday night.
Despite Dela Rosa's remarks, the Palace explained that the lawmaker can also contradict the President because he too has principles.
"Ang bawat tao meron personal sintemyento sa isang kasama niya kaibigan pero tandaan niyo na bawat isa din may kaniya-kaniyang prinsipyo," Panelo said.
(Everyone has a personal sentiment on a friend or companion but everyone has principles too.)
