MANILA — More than 200 foreign nationals were arrested in a raid of a network technology company in Makati City, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Tuesday.

BI Intelligence Division Chief Fortunato Manahan Jr. said the 276 foreigners were arrested "for verification of their travel documents and immigration status."

Most of those arrested were engaged in online gaming business, Manahan said.

“Most were undocumented and were unable to present any proof showing their status here during the arrest,” Manahan said.

“If proven to be working here without the proper visa, [they] may be charged for deportation,” he added.

Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said the raid was conducted after the bureau received reports that foreign nationals without immigration visas or permits were working in the building, which is located along Ayala Avenue.

The BI's Intelligence Division arrested a total of 553 foreign nationals in 2018, mostly illegal workers.
