MANILA - The Philippine National Police on Monday said it is on the hunt for suspected New People's Army rebels who opened fire at Special Action Force commandos in Antipolo City, Rizal on Sunday morning.
Rizal Provincial Police spokesperson Senior Inspector Cherrylyn Agtarap said a police mobile carrying 8 SAF members of the 33rd Special Action Company 3rd Battalion was on its way back to the office in Antipolo City when NPA gunmen opened fire at the vehicle. The attack occurred around 6 a.m.-7 a.m. in Barangay San Jose.
Six SAF members were wounded in the attack and were immediately brought to the Antipolo District Hospital and Amang Rodriguez Hospital for medical treatment.
The other 2 SAF commandos were later found taking cover behind trees and boulders.
PNP chief Ronald dela Rosa, in a press briefing at Camp Crame, said police have already set up various checkpoints around Rizal to arrest the gunmen.
"Yung ating SAF ay nagpadala na ng additional troops doon para hanapin ang responsable sa pag-ambush ng ating tauhan. Kasama na rin ang Philippine Army sa Rizal," Dela Rosa said.
