MANILA - The spokesperson of President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday said he would not be surprised if Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte becomes the country’s next president, amid talk that she is being groomed to succeed her father.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said this after he was asked where Duterte-Carpio gets funding for a nationwide caravan supporting the senatorial slate of her regional party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP).
Panelo said Duterte-Carpio has many “admirers” which is why it’s not hard for her to gather funds and support.
“There are many admirers of Inday Sara – admirers and supporters. In fact, there is even a movement launching her to be the next president,” Panelo said in a Palace press briefing.
“Maraming bilib sa kanya eh. They see in her the character of the father: magaling, matalino, matapang – mas matapang pa nga kay Presidente daw eh.”
Duterte-Carpio earlier this week said mounting a possible presidential run in 2022 to succeed her father is not yet on her mind, as some of her supporters would sometimes call her as the country’s next president.
“Masyado pang malayo ang 2022… It’s not yet time to think about it,” she said.

“Iyan ay dapat ipagdasal for guidance and wisdom, dahil kung para sa iyo iyan, magiging madali dahil nandyan ang diyos na magbubukas lahat ng mga opportunities.”
(We will pray for guidance and wisdom. If it’s really meant for you, it will be easy because God will open all the opportunities for you.)
