MANILA- Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos insisted on Tuesday that she earned a degree from Princeton University.
Marcos, in a television interview, said she graduated from the prestigious university as far as she knows.
"Pumasok ako sa Princeton at pagkaalam ko, nag-graduate ako," she said in an interview with News5.
(I entered Princeton and as far as I know, I graduated.)
Marcos' statement contradicts a Rappler fact-check with Princeton University spokesperson Michael Hotchkiss, who said that although she was enrolled at the university in the 1970s, she was not "awarded" a degree.
"Pero ang sa akin ang alam ko, ako ay politics of performance, alam ko ang ginagawa ko. Pumasok din ako sa UP katulad po ninyo at alam natin ang importante dito sino nakakapagdeliver ng performance at ng track record," she added.
(For me, I know I am for the politics of performance. I know what I am doing. I also entered UP like you and we know that what's important here is who can deliver as well as one's track record.)
Marcos, on her official website, claims to be "one of the first female graduates from an Ivy League School—Princeton University, graduating with honors."
The daughter of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. is eyeing a Senate seat in the May 13 midterm elections.
In a previous interview with radio DZMM, she also dodged the question on her years in Princeton.
"Yes, tama po talagang it's the season. Talagang eleksyon na eleksyon na kahit na hindi pa nagdedeklara ang Comelec. Ginawa rin yan kay Bongbong at sa mga iba pang nakikilala natin," she said, referring to her brother, who was also accused of falsifying details about his educational attainment.
[Yes, right, it's really election season, even if Comelec has yet to declare it. Critics also did that to Bongbong and to some people I also know.]
"My record speaks for itself. Performance man lang ay makikita naman natin na alam naman natin ang ginagawa at marami naman tayong natulungan. Higit sa lahat, marami tayong solusyon na maidudulot na makatutulong sa nakararami," said Marcos.
[My performance, track record will show what I have done. I have many solutions that can help many people.]
