MANILA- A Filipino who tried to seek medical attention in a clinic at Festival Mall in Muntinlupa City was brought to the hospital after showing flu-like symptoms as malls guard against the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus.

The patient showed flu-like symptoms during a checkup at the Healthway Medical clinic on Thursday, Festival Mall said in a statement, and was immediately brought to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa.

"Rest assured that Festival Mall has been taking precautionary measures to assure the safety of our shoppers, business partners, and its employees," the mall said.

Festival Mall added that it also coordinated with the Muntinlupa City Health Office over the incident.

The mall remains fully operational, it clarified.

Malls and business establishments have set up alcohol stations and purifiers, and other measures against the spread of the novel coronavirus which was first confirmed in the Philippines last week.

The novel coronavirus has killed at least 630 people and infected more than 30,000 worldwide in a matter of weeks, authorities said Friday.
