MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said he fired another undersecretary of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) for granting funds outside of the General Appropriation Act to government officials.
"If you want to add that is something out of the budget or out even of the GAA and there are some unexpected expenses and you want to perform, you need the money, you just call this guy because he has another guy, runner niya. He gets the money for you, approval, but you give him something in return," Duterte said during the 45th anniversary celebration of the National Economic and Development Authority.
"'Yan, 'yan—pati ako, piniprito na kami sa sarili naming mantika diyan. Kaya pinatawag ko, ginanun ko talaga sa mukha," he added.
The President did not identify the official and did not give further details.
Duterte earlier fired DBM undersecretary for legal Gertrudo de Leon over alleged corruption.
Among prominent officials who were previously axed were Interior Secretary Ismael Sueno, Dangerous Drugs Board chief Dionisio Santiago, and Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor Terry Ridon.
Even the cousin of Duterte’s partner Honeylet Avanceña, PCUP Commissioner Melissa Avanceña Aradanas, was not spared.
The President also said he fired former Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) chairperson Patricia Licuanan over alleged frequent travels and the delays in the release of allowances of government scholars.
Amid allegations of excessive travels, Licuanan was asked to resign by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea ahead of the expiration of her term in July 2018.
Duterte reiterated his warning to government workers against traveling abroad using public funds.
"Stop muna. Tutal dadaan lang ako eh, I'm now on my years—fourth? Going fourth—my second or third, madali lang 'yan. In a jiffy, I'm out. But at this time during the remaining years of my presidency huwag, 'wag talaga kasi uupakan kita," he said.
