MANILA (UPDATED) — A closed van accidentally fell on its side pinning a man and a woman on board a bicycle in a freak accident in Pasig City on Tuesday.

“Ang bad news may namatay. Ang nangyari po dito yung isang closed van ay tumaob mag-isa. Unfortunately, may naipit na dalawang nasa sidewalk,” according to Thomas Orbos, chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

(The bad news is somebody died. What happened was the closed van was knocked over. Unfortunately, two passersby were hit.)

The victims, Ernesto Abuel and daughter Deborah, were rushed to the hospital, but the father was declared dead on arrival at Medical City.

At the time of the accident, which happened along C5 Road in Barangay Ugong, Ernesto was bringing his daughter to the grocery store where she works.

“Nakita namin na natauban ng van yung mag-ama, nasa ilalim. Yung babae nakalabas ang ulo, yung tatay, nadaganan. Yung babae may malaking sugat sa ulo. Yung ama unconscious,” said Senior Inspector Cid Cariaga of the Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group.

(The father was pinned beneath the van. The girl, we could see her head. She had a huge gash in her head, but the father was unconscious.)

The van's driver, Wilfredo Rafols, surrendered to authorities. He said he was trying to avoid a car but lost control of the steering wheel, causing the truck to lose its balance.

The van, owned by Adsia Logistics Inc., was heading to Quezon City to deliver grocery items.

The company has reached out to the Abuel family and promised to cover expenses the victims' incurred. — With a report from Alex Calda, DZMM
