MANILA - Police apprehended the mayor of Pantar, Lanao del Norte after he was allegedly caught with firearms in Iligan City late Tuesday afternoon.
Mayor Jabar Tago and 8 others were found in possession of firearms during a checkpoint in Barangay Tomas Cabili past 4 p.m. Seized from them were M16, MP5, 9mm pistol, and an unlicensed .45 pistol.
A gun ban is in effect nationwide since Jan. 13 until June 12 for the May midterm polls. During the said period, it is prohibited to bear, carry or transport firearms, explosives or other deadly weapons.
Qualified people may however seek a gun ban exemption by applying for the appropriate certificate of authority at the Commission on Elections (Comelec). Violation of the said prohibited acts shall constitute an election offense.
