MANILA - A House of Representatives committee on Wednesday approved 3 measures seeking to legalize divorce in pre-dominantly Catholic Philippines, the only country in the world aside from the Vatican where it remains illegal.
The bills will be forwarded to a technical working group for consolidation.
Lawmakers have regularly filed a bill to legalize divorce since 1999. The House of Representatives last year passed the measure on third and final reading but it failed in the Senate.
Senate President Vicente Sotto III earlier said the chamber would mount "healthy debates" on the proposal.
More details to follow.
