MANILA - The Philippine National Police is beefing up security and safety activities in their respective areas of jurisdiction amid possible attacks by the New People's Army.

In a press briefing at Camp Crame on Monday, PNP chief Director General Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa said they have been procuring equipment to defend their units.

"That's why we are procuring equipment for the defense of our units and stations. We have to defend ourselves and be on attack mode," Dela Rosa said.

The PNP chief was reacting to a statement by Communist Party of the Philippines founding chairman Jose Maria Sison urging the NPA to continue carrying out attacks to compel the government to resume the peace talks.

Sison's pronouncement came after National Democratic Front consultant Rafael Baylosis and companion Roque Guillermo Jr. were arrested for illegal possession of firearms and explosives.

Dela Rosa assured there will be no special treatment for Baylosis, who is currently detained at the PNP Custodial Center.
