A 9-month pregnant elementary school teacher and her husband died in a tragic road accident in Barangay Suyo, Dingras, Ilocos Norte Thursday morning.
The fatalities were identified as Analiza Embana, 34, and Alexy Embana, 35, a tricycle driver, both living in Barangay Nagrebcan in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte.
Police said the two were riding a motorcycle on their way to school when they crashed into an approaching passenger jeepney driven by Manny Lucas, a resident of Barangay Ferdinand, Marcos, Ilocos Norte.
According to PNP Dingras Deputy Chief, Senior Inspector Christopher Malanum, Lucas overtook another vehicle going west and suddenly bumped into the couple's motorcycle.
“Sa pago-overtake niya, paparating naman itong motorcycle. Marahil hindi na niya maiwasan at maabot ang kanyang preno kaya’t nagkabangaan sila," he said.
(While he was overtaking, the motorcycle was approaching. Probably he was not able to avoid and hit the brakes which is why they crashed into each other.)
Due to the strong impact of the collision, the wife was thrown away while her husband was dragged down underneath the passenger jeep to a canal.
They were immediately rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead on arrival after sustaining severe wounds on the heads, legs, and arms.
Three injured passengers were also rushed to the hospital.
The driver of the jeepney, however, denied that he was the one overtaking.
He explained that he was about to stop along the road to pick up passengers when suddenly the motorcycle came in the road and overtook another motorcycle going east.
“Magpi-pick up sana ako pasaheros, nag-flasher ako papunta sa tabi, tapos bigla na lang sila parating. Nag-overtake sila. Motor ‘yung una. Pumunta ako sa tabi tapos biglang tapos parating na sila,” Lucas said.
Lucas denied that he lost control.
Relatives of the fatalities, who were deeply grieving over the incident, added that Analiza was supposed to prepare her papers regarding her maternity leave today for she was expected to give birth on February 18.
The couple left behind a 10-year-old daughter.
Lucas faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injuries and damage to property.
