MANILA - Senator Antonio Trillanes on Thursday said he is mulling charges against an official of the Anti-Money Laundering Council for supposedly denying President Rodrigo Duterte's flagged bank documents.
Trillanes, a staunch critic of Duterte, said he wants to sue AMLC Executive Director Mel Georgie Racela for his "cover-up" and for "denying" that the documents came from their agency when it was indicated in the minutes of the council's meeting in May 2016.
"Plano ko rin pakasuhan si AMLC Exec. Dir. Racela sa pag cover-up at pag deny na ang mga flagged bank transaction documents ay hindi galing sa AMLC samantalang ito ay naka saad sa minutes ng AMLC meeting noong May 2016 na ito ay parte ng MOA with the OMB to provide such documents for intelligence purposes," the senator said in a statement.
"Matatandaan na naitalaga lang ni Duterte si Racela sa kanyang position noong January 2017 lang, kaya hindi sakop ng kanyang termino ang mga panahong yun," he said.
Carandang last year said the Office of the Ombudsman had started looking into the wealth of the President and his family, and that it was coordinating with the AMLC.
The AMLC, however, said it had not released any report to the Ombudsman as it has yet to evaluate its request for an investigation of the President's and his family's bank accounts.
Malacañang on Monday said the Office of Executive Secretary filed charges against Carandang for grave misconduct for the supposed illegal disclosure of the President and his family’s bank transactions.
Carandang has also been placed under 90 days preventive suspension, said Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, however, said she will not enforce Carandang's suspension, saying the Palace's action was a breach of the Ombudsman's independence.
Trillanes said he "fully support(s)" Morales' position to defy "what is clearly an illegal and unconstitutional order by Duterte and his minions" to suspend Carandang.
"Maling-mali si Duterte dito kahit saan mo tignan. Bukod pa sa independent ang Ombudsman and her deputies, ayon sa ating Constitution, pinasuspende nya ang taong nagiimbestiga sa mga nakaw na yaman nya. Maliwanag na obstruction of justice din yan," he said.
