MANILA - Senator Grace Poe denied rumors that she is seeking to block Facebook in the Philippines because of the proliferation of fake news on the social media platform.
"First of all, that's counterproductive. What we can do is we can encourage Facebook to be able to cooperate with us," Poe told ANC, adding her statements used on viral posts were "spliced."
Poe, who chairs the committee on public information and mass media, said she will be inviting Facebook representatives to the next Senate hearing. These people, she said, had to skip the proceedings last time due to "management changes."
"Filipinos are one of the most prolific Facebook users. It's pertinent for them to be able to appear in the hearing and explain how exactly they go about spreading news and how they feed our own pages," she said.
Poe said there is no need to legislate anything to control information but there is a need to educate the public to counter deceptive information.
